Poem a day challenge – Feb 8 (backdated)

This is a make-up posting for not having any time on the 8th to write a poem. This was done during my wife’s Eco Writing workshop today and is a piece inspired by an orange from our back yard. I have been wanting to play with structure and do a poem with shorter lines, and I liked how the meter of this one really felt better when I broke the lines up.

Navel Orange

the navel stretches
open across the
swollen pregnant belly
of the orange,
curved slightly upward–
it must be a boy–
skin thick and
unyielding to my
touch, protecting the
sweetness within.

when her body
cannot carry the
weight of its
precious fruit any
longer, i will
take her down
from the tree
and gently help
break her open
