I went to my wife’s Eco Writing workshop today, and one of the prompts was to write about the animal we identify with, that is leaping out of us, or that lives within us.
What Lies Within
what animal lies within me, whispering
in my ear, clawing at my chest, desperate
to be heard, stealing my voice in anger
or despair, howling and calling out
to the wild, not to let the wild out,
but to let the wild in,
to feel it course through my veins
and give the beat to my heart?
that beast caged within, eager
to stretch its legs into mine and run free,
to drive its paws into my fists and tear free,
to push its snout up through my throat
and give itself a name.
